Liberty Bell
An important symbol of the American Revolutionary War, the Liberty Bell has been described as an icon of liberty and justice. First hung in Independence Hall, Philadelphia, it bore the inscription, “Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof”, (Lev. 25:10). It was first rung in July 1776 to proclaim the declaration of independence.
The main inscription on the Liberty Bell is, “Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof”, source Lev. (25:10). The Bell was cast by Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London and delivered to Philadelphia in late August/early September 1752 via the ship Hibernia. The original bell weighed over 2,000 pounds. The height of the bell measures 3 feet from the lip to crown. The circumference of the bell around the lip measures about 12 feet; and the circumference around the crown is 6 feet and 11 inches.
The “Liberty Bell” bears the motto, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof” (Leviticus 25:10). It is misguided legend that the Bell was rung to signal the Continental Congress’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. In reality, the Bell was rung four days later on July 8 to celebrate the first public reading of the document.
The name “Liberty Bell” was first applied in 1839 in an abolitionist pamphlet. It was rung for the last time for George Washington’s birthday in 1846, during which it cracked irreparably. On January 1, 1976, the bell was moved to a pavilion about 100 yards (91 meters) from Independence Hall.
The Liberty Bell Center is open daily with the exception of Christmas Day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, operating for extended hours during the summer months. No tickets are required; however, visitors must submit to a security checkpoint before entering, similar to security at a U.S. airport. The Bell is visited by two million tourists every year!
